A-D-V-I-S-E-R

When you hear the word 'Advisor' one would think that if you went to this person, they would ADVISE you... Interesting concept. CSUMB and my particular academic adviser who shall remain nameless, severely suck! When I went to my academic adviser for advise about graduate school, his response was "graduate school is hard, you should really think about going".... ummmm excuse me.... I have a 3.8 average GPA here at CSUMB.... I know graduate school is hard, but it is OK I think I can handle it...

Whatever! Here at CSUMB I have become totally aware that it is a truly hands-off, help-yourself kind of place. So, I am continuing my journey to graduate school without the help of my adviser who's only words of advise were "its hard". HAHAHAHA whats the point of having that title???

  1. I've found that when you find someone helpful at this school, just go ask them whenever you need something. People are usually willing to help but I mean, everybody is different in the kind of help they want.

My advice, go ask DAVE! He's very helpful. Also, Ilene is great too. They are more "hands-on" if that's what you're looking for. :-)

  2. oh boy. i hate the advising at this school. honestly, when i started here as a freshman i went to the student advising to find out what classes i needed to take. Usually you do this during orientation but i was graduating from high school the day of orientation so that didn't work out. They told me to take this science class that i thought counted for the class and the lab. thats what they told me. everything i had counted. So did my upper division advisor. she told me i was good. then i realized a semester before i was planning on graduating that no. i need to go back and now take the freshman science lab AND the class to go with it. crap. i love csumb advising.

  3. Some people just shouldn't be teaching and I'm not sure if they realize that advising is part of their job and should look up the meaning of advising. Sorry you have a horrible advisor. My advisor isn't that great either and is trying to mold me into a little her. I usually go to other professors that I'm comfortable with and ask for advise.

  4. I must admit that advising is something that sucks across the board. I learned in Junior college that your advisor may be wrong at times, the hard way. what i do now is ask more than one person. find the resources they use and find the information you need yourself. This is a shity aspect of school but you can transcend this by planing for the unplanned
